No swap?

So, yesterday, I tried running a Windows Based game that had ran fine earlier, but didn't now. Using wine, it said that there was no swap space. I checked under Ubuntu's system monitor, and I didn't see any swap, either. So, using GParted, I allocated some free space to the swap, but it still doesn't show up?
My question is, where is the swap space? Does it not show up until it gets used?
I'm using Ubuntu 7.10, and have a 1 GB of RAM.

You can create either a swap file or partition. Your choice. When created, you need to set and activate it. I suggest using mkswap and swapon, then add a line to /etc/fstab for automatic boot time activation of swap space.
