Startup Problem

Postby ColColt » Sun Jun 15, 2008 3:07 pm

For several weeks now I've had a problem with shutting down Windows XP. It takes longer than usual but the main problem is at startup. It takes longer than it once did and even though all icons load on the desktop, there's only one that shows (besides the date/time) in the system tray and that's the volume control. Three should be about eight of them to include a-sauared, IncrediMail WinPatrol and avast along with others. I can't open Firefox or any other program and have to end up rebooting again to load these programs.

I did a system restore and that worked a few days and now is back to the way it was. I tried sfc /scannow but that proved to be a big pain as they wanted me to load the Win Home CD but after I did, it gave me several options, one being to load XP again. Why would I want to do that? At any rate, it tells me the version I have is newer than what's on the CD(and why not-the CD is six years old) so, I quit fooling with it. Something is causing all these programs from loading the first time but it always succeeds the second time around. That should need to be done. Any suggestions?

You don't need all those icons on the system tray.
This brings posts like
"Why is bootup so slow"
Use desktop shortcuts where you can,Virus protection excepted though.

How long do you consider slow, starting or shutting down ?
Are you being patient that Windows has work to do first ?
It says it's saveing things when you click "Turn off Computer"
