reading your logs

Postby Mr. McKey » Sun Dec 03, 2006 6:04 pm

Ok, so this is probably really bad... Ive been doing/learning SEO for this company for
about a year now and I have never looked at a log before... in my life.

Well, today I opened one up and saw the reason why I have never looked at one before...
I cant tell what I am looking at!!

How can you tell when your page is spidered and by who???

Logs aren't usually important. It;s just a copy of results usually.
Sometimes needed for tech support forwarding.
Depends on The application.
Why is this in the Internet Forum ? Whats the logs name ?

Logs aren't important?? How many servers have you run?
All logs are very important to look at they can give you insites into many things such as popular areas of your site or (more importantly) hack attempts.

Mr. McKey when looking through your logs look for IP addresses or hostanames belonging to googlebot. I know one popular googlebot IP to look for is 66.249.64.x If your using Linux/UNIX a good way to look through logs would be to do something like this:

Code: Select all
ls /path/to/apache/log | grep 'googlebot'

I said most aren't,
like most of my 212.
Many are empty. Most can be deleted as junk files.
I don't know what SEO refers to.Do you ?
This might be an exception,I asked for it to be posted to decide.
How many servers can YOU run.I have just 1. :D
