Misc computer stuff

Small, but annoying problem.

Okay, I'm running a Gateway Laptop with Windows Vista. Last night, my wireless network connection went dead and it said something like the driver for my wireless was bad, and I needed to reinstall the system. So I took the disk I got with the laptop, put it in, and reinstalled Vista. Now everything is messing up. I started it up to find my McAfee program completely messed up, and I ended up uninstalling it, and downloading a free trial of Windows One Care security center. But now, my icon on my toolbar for sound has a speaker and a red "x" beside it. When I move the cursor over it, it says "No Audio Output Device is installed." Any help here? I've heard this is a common problem, but I don't know jack when it comes to computers. A few other problems I've been facing:
-Windows Live Messenger randomly closing and not wanting to start back up until I rebooted.
-Many programs coming up with error messages saying the application had an error, had to close, and windows will update me if a solution is found for the situation.

Any and all help is much appreciated. :-)
